Conversations with God

I sometimes find myself feeling down after reading about the environment, something about which I care deeply. It’s hard not to. We are in the midst of a mass extinction of species, the rainforests keep getting cut down, and there is plastic all over the ocean. I would love to be able to fix all of these issues overnight, and while I do my part, I am just one person of many. In these times it helps me to remember that these issues are merely the result of actions by humans – it is a cause and effect. It feels hopeless and almost condemned, but I know we can begin to heal and fix this. Happily, many places and people are beginning to. It’s not all doom and gloom, and there are glimmers of hope if one only looks. (Here are a few links to see some positive environmental news: and

In times of sadness about our physical world, it also helps me to remember the quote I referenced above. This world truly is a shadow of the spiritual world. We can work to help heal ourselves and the environment knowing that God is eternal, and cannot be harmed.

Seeing the Good

I admit that sometimes it is hard to see the good in people and things around us. We live in a beautiful world that is also full of pain, hardship, and suffering. Is it trite or even cruel to see the good when we know others are suffering? In my own life, I have found it’s always good to see the good, not in order to deny the bad or difficult, but to allow the good to grow.

I would not have healed if everyone around me were only seeing the negative in the world. I needed visionaries who could see past pain and see beauty and love in me, and in the world around me. I held onto those people’s conceptions until I could walk into them too. These people saw love in me, where I saw sadness and woundedness. They saw meaning in my trauma, where I saw chaos. It is possible to see good in the world. It is also possible to be honest about the areas of your life and our world that need healing and attention. They aren’t mutually exclusive.

Seeing the good for me truly comes from a place of being in touch with God and love in my heart. I clear away the clutter of my mind and my thoughts and sit in that place of peaceful love. There, things are at peace, and I am at peace. It’s easier to see the good from there and easier to allow it to grow. I believe the world and all people are basically good. It comes from the heart.

Seeing the Good

Seeing the good in myself and others takes practice. I can tell I’m feeling good inside when I can see good things around me. On my most depressed days, I could see nothing good; not in myself, not in others, and not in the world. When I practice centering myself on my heart and in my breathing, I can create a feeling of peace, and open my eyes to see the good that’s in my life and in the world.

What about when there are so many difficult situations on our planet? Even when I am at my most peaceful, I still see these. The state of our environment is one aspect of our world that I’ve been consumed with thinking about and worrying about. I know our earth is in need of so much loving care, and that many species are going extinct. I have spent so much time reading about it that even when I look at the beautiful trees in my neighborhood, I have started thinking, “oh, those trees are beautiful,  but the earth is suffering so much.” I realized this week that I’ve been doing this, and have resolved to just see the good and appreciate it for what it is.

Now, when I look at the trees and birds in our neighborhood, I am working on noticing their beauty with no qualifiers: the trees are beautiful, the birds are lovely. I am grateful for them. I am not denying the work that still needs to be done for our planet, but I am giving myself space to appreciate beauty when I see it, and to be grateful for it as is.

I’ve also begun practicing reading several “Good News” websites like and to allow myself time to see that there are many good things happening in our world. I still read the “regular” news, but I try to balance it with reading news that shares the positive stories as well. There are many beautiful things happening every day! Even though there are many things that need fixing in our world, I truly don’t believe things get fixed by feeling depressed. Things get fixed when we have hope for the future.

I am wishing for you to see the good in your life and in the world, and where you can’t see it, to begin creating it.

All my love.
